C.S. Lewis wrestles with suffering as a concrete rather than theoretical concept
This is a clip from the 1993 movie Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis. It was directed by Richard Attenborough. In this clip, C.S. Lewis (who goes by the nickname Jack) wrestles with his grief following the death of his companion Joy, who succumbed to cancer. The attempts of his colleagues do not help with Jack's crisis of faith, but he ultimately shares a moment of connection through grief with Joy's son.

Orb weaver anchoring web

This is the orb weaver in my backyard anchoring her web between the leaves of the tree above, the ground below, and the patio chairs to the side. She's zip lining around, creating masterpieces on her back like Michaelangelo.

Judges 12:6
The last time I watched this movie on network television the subtitles were missing in this scene.
While the main focus is about faith and religion, I feel that there's an even deeper message in this, once that puts Bartlett in his place. *President Bartlett:* Can you name any of Jesus' disciples? If you can't, that's okay. I usually can't remember the names of my kids, or for that matter... *Jhin-Wei:* Peter, Andrew, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, Thaddeus, Simon, Judas and James. Mr. President, Christianity is not demonstrated through a recitation of facts. You're seeking evidence of faith, a wholehearted acceptance of God's promise for a better world. 'For we hold that man is justified by faith alone' is what St. Paul said. 'Justified by faith alone.' Faith is the true... uh, I'm trying to... shibboleth. Faith is the true shibboleth. Bartlett is an extremely intelligent man, an educated man with decades of studying under some of the greatest learning institutions in the world. He is proud that he is smart, that he's a brainiac, and he looks down on people who would throw an education away willingly. However, this was a perfect lesson for him that not everything in life, especially the most important and powerful things, has to be understood rigorously, to be identified and known. Bartlett may know the Bible inside and out, but Jhin-Wei's belief, anyone's belief, is no less than his if they have faith. Thankfully, he realizes that at the end.
0:30 I reckon “Soak-rates” (ie. the Ancient Greek Philosopher Socrates) was definitely making sense *of existence itself* when he uttered this statement, because if you *know* that you know *nothing* then you will *incline* to know *something.* But in more *specific* terms, according to what I know as per my Spiritual Belief System (or Reality Understanding System), there are *three faculties of knowledge* that you need to develop in order to excel at pretty much anything worthwhile in Life. The first is the faculty of *knowing* that you *don’t* know whatever it is that you want to know, the second is *knowing* that you are *coming to know* whatever it is you want to know, and the third is *knowing* that you have *come to know* whatever it is you want to know. I reckon all three faculties would need to *activate in succession* to make sure you are going in the *right direction,* or you risk not making *much* progress at all, or else not making progress at the *rate* at which you otherwise could, or going in *completely* wrong direction to reach a “dead-end”. I think knowledge *of the faculties* are important because it can help those people who are *stuck* in the midst of going *nowhere* in important fields of endeavour (including medical research), by inclining them to *make the necessary changes* to avoid “unduly expending” valuable time, energy, resources etc. Of course a person could always change their trajectory part way through the process of gaining knowledge and perhaps discover something *even more* worthwhile, but the faculty of coming to know would still need to be active (in the background) to reach that end. In acting contrary to all of the above, I think there is a *risk* of the human ego becoming a hindrance by inclining you to *believe* that you are coming to know whatever it is you want to know, when in actual fact - you are not. In more extreme cases, I think it can incline you to believe that you know *everything* when in reality you don’t know *much at all,* or else you don’t know *enough* of whatever it is that you *need* to know in order to achieve whatever you want to achieve in Life. It can also incline you to (want to) *not* know *anything at all* and just Live in a state of abject *ignorance* due to any number of reasons, including the absence of knowledge itself, whatever seeks to safeguard it at a social level, or even just sheer laziness on your part. But all of that would serve to *severely limit* the capacity of yourself and your society to achieve anything worthwhile in Life.
😅
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wonderful laura innes directed this episode
Why can’t we have this Republican in office back instead of MAGA?!?
Love love this show ❤️!!
If only we had politicians this intelligent and respectful.
Imagine this guy in Night at The Museum.
How freaking intimidating must it have been to go from being a refugee fleeing religious persecution in China, to sitting in the Oval Office with the President of the United States. I'm not sure I would have remembered my own name...
My favourite movie of all time xxx
Mine too xx
Not a real depiction of a political event. Vinick gave a straight answer!
A beautiful scene.
Socrates: <confused difficulty communicating angry stoic using tons of four dollar words really wordy something aristotle would later make his entire career> Bill and Ted: <the same thing in three words> They are leaving samsara for sure.
The bible literally says we are not justified by faith alone idk what evangelical dummy wrote this scene James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Ephraimites were Israelites though
So-crates is definitely the most memorable of the time-travelling historical people, the actor did a great job.
Tony Steedman, a British actor who played tons of TV roles and many films.
Keanu Reeves is so little! Awwww
A little too much plot armor that he happened to say the exact word. It was like the scene with lord john marburry where the Prez cant remember a quote and lord john just rolls it off with barely a clue.
I'm 67 years old. I was a Sunday school teacher, never missed a service early in my life and have been told I know more about the Bible than most preachers. I would have never been granted asylum. In all my studying of God's Word, I never heard about shibboleth. Thank you, West Wing writers. I learned something I've never heard in a sermon. Bartlett can quote the Bible better than the sanctimonious characters who cherry pick the scriptures to fit their agenda.
I have always been fascinated by how selective the teaching of the bible is from group to group. In my experience "Angry Athiests" tend to be word perfect on the bloodbath sections of the old testament that most practicing Christians have never heard of.
Faith... what the gullible use to justify belief... instead of actual evidence.
Faith folks not faith plus works. We are saved solely by the work of Christ on our behalf. His death and His resurrection are the works that save us. We receive our Savior by faith (John 1:12), through faith alone Acts 16:31; Romans 3:28; 4:5; 5:1; Galatians 2:16; 3:24; Ephesians 1:13; and Philippians 3:9. Paul says those who have true faith in Jesus Christ will be “eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:14). To return to Ephesians 2, immediately after teaching that we are saved through faith, not through works (Ephesians 2:8-9), Paul says that we were created “to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Salvation comes by God’s grace through faith, and that faith is made manifest in good works. The works follow the faith and are a proof of it.
'Fresh off the boat' and got to meet the POTUS. What better way to start off in America.
"here we have a good example of american tourists thinking that any place in the world is obligated to speak English"
Religion poisons everything.
Omfak never saw a wear swear 🤬
Vinick was the best president (or presidential candidate) in the show. Was a thousand times smarter, more interesting and more eloquent than Bartlett and Santos combined. The only admirable character in the entire show. This scene especially was amazing.
And in real life Arnold Vinick would never stand a chance in a Republican primary. Let's appreciate the fantasy that had to occur in order for us to get the best fictional Presidental race that's ever been on TV.
@@ktvindicare I don't know that. It's not like we'd ever a Democrat pilot who's pro life. And when you see the nincompoop of Biden it's not like we'd get any good Democrat president. Getting a smart Republican who is conservative is much more likely. Gingrich etc were of the same ilk.
Ellen De generous and local flooding. I once cared USA. GLOBAL WARMING.
Ah, never mind. I see grammar's not your strong either. Come back once you've mastered the fundamentals.
Put the word Truth next to a word that reminds us illiterates of the word Socialism or the word Socialist and Bob's your foster Unkle. RIP
Not sure what you're saying bud, but you should start with a spellcheck.
Talking the HINE leg off a Don Quixote. You never let me. **** You!
Don Quixote wouldn't have had a hind* leg. You just aren't doing well.
Maybe him saying James once was a better shibboleth.
He must have been Reformed Baptist.
Notice how Sheen puts his hands in his pockets once he’s made the decision. This gesture is before its pointed out in the end of season 2 by the young Doris that’s Bartlett’s tell, that he’s made up his mind to do something.
Dolores*, but sharp eye noticing that.
How do you practice???? In China very carefully
Ach aye, that's what it's about, now, friends it's Muslims who aren't persecuted bloody liars by all means Shibboleth
No bibles ohhh okay mate, have one of mine, got a few to spare

i love how they just go around casually collecting historical figures like pokemon
Such utter bullshit. This is why the world laughs at America.
Love it. Still good.
He always has Sandwiches and Coffee; yet no one ever gets to eat or drink. For Myself I’d have both Coffee and Two Chocolate Biscuits: but I’m strange that way, no matter where I am or who I’m seeing.
Managing the continuity while actually eating is too difficult, unless you are fake-eating nuts or jellybeans. Furthermore, after a few takes, no one wants to eat any more food.
This scene is tremendous!
I Know its Just a movie of course But I Love how fast they got Socrates to Go with Them 😂
PFT brings it home!
I would have sent this group packing. Only reason they even got to this point was a special interest group had access to people with power in the White House and the only reason that special interest lobbyist group cared at all about their well being was because they were Christian. Meanwhile, an entire generation of Uyghur muslims in China are literally jailed in forced labor and re-education camps. You think the Christian pastor that set this whole meeting up would lift a finger to help a group of them escape oppression in China?
So you would have sent them packing because a Christian group has access to powerful people and they wanted to help Christians got it. If you hate Christians why don't you just say that?
@@harmanvirk4421 I don't think someone being a member of a religious group should in any way influence US policy. If there's a group being persecuted and we're going to bend international law to help them, we should do so consistently. The fact that we don't shows an inherent bias that's completely subjective. If they had been a group of persecuted Muslims, this issue never would have gotten before the President and no help would have been given.
@@jpa5038Is religious asylum not a thing in the United States. Any persecuted religious group should be allowed in if they qualify for religious asylum. Same thing with Muslims.
@@harmanvirk4421 It's a very select thing is the point I'm making. If these groups can be subjectively chosen, they can be subjectively declined as well.

Streaming and broadcast TV versions of this film don't have Socrates's subtitles, so this scene doesn't make any sense.
